A video has shown the Kogi senator, Dino Melaye, appearing to sit by a road kerb in Abuja, hours after he was taken into police custody Tuesday.
Mr Melaye reportedly submitted himself hours earlier, but was later hospitalised after jumping off a moving vehicle to foil an alleged attempt to drive him to his home Kogi state,
The senator has said he wants to be questioned in Abuja, saying he fears for his safety in Kogi where he has a long running feud with the governor, Yahaya Bello.
In the video sent to PREMIUM TIMES by a witness, MacDonald Kwoiki, Mr. Melaye is seen sitting on an

Senator Dino Melaye arrived at Zankli Hospital Abuja in a stretcher
Dino Melaye has landed in hospital after reportedly jumping out of a moving police vehicle in Abuja, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.
Mr Melaye, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, submitted himself to the police earlier today. But he was being taken to Lokoja, the capital of his home state, where he is expected to be interrogated by the police in connection to a murder case and other criminal activities.
The senator is currently at Zankli Medical Centre in Utako District, Abuja, a hospital spokesperson confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES by telephone Tuesday afternoon.
The medical official said Mr Melaye was not in critical condition, but he is suspected to have broken a vertebrae.
There were reports that the police were taking him to Lokoja to parade him alongside previously arrested suspects who have allegedly confessed to being supported by Mr Melaye.
But the Kogi police commissioner, Ali Janga, told PREMIUM TIMES he did not plan to arraign the senator, saying he would only convene a press briefing about the matter.
Mr Janga did not immediately say whether he would cancel his planned press conference now that Mr Melaye has apparently escaped from being taken to Lokoja.

President Muhammadu Buhari talking

Premium Times reported that suspected herdsmen killed 15 people in an early morning attack on the church in Ukpor-Mbalom, a community in Gwer West Local Government Area.
Terver Akase, a spokesperson to Governor Samuel Ortom, told the newspaper that the attackers also burnt 50 houses and sacked the entire community.
The Catholic Diocese of Makurdi later confirmed two of its priests, Joseph Gor and Felix Tyolaha, both reverend fathers, were killed in the attack on St Ignatius Quasi Parish in Ukpor, Mbalom.
In a State House statement by his spokesperson, Femi Adeshina, President Buhari described the killing as “vile and satanic.”
Below is the statement:
STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE
PRESIDENT BUHARI CONDEMNS DESPICABLE KILLING OF PRIESTS AND WORSHIPPERS IN BENUE CHURCH
President Muhammadu Buhari has described as vile and satanic the killing of worshippers and two priests at a Catholic church in Ukpor-Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.
“I extend my sincere condolences to the government and people of Benue State, the Mbalom community, and especially the Bishop, priests and members of the St Ignatius’ Catholic Church, whose premises was the unfortunate venue of the heinous killings by gunmen.
“This latest assault on innocent persons is particularly despicable. Violating a place of worship, killing priests and worshippers is not only vile, evil and satanic, it is clearly calculated to stoke up religious conflict and plunge our communities into endless bloodletting,” the President said.

Stressing that the country will not bow to the machinations of evildoers, President Buhari vowed that the assailants would be hunted down and made to pay for the sacrilege committed.

Herdsmen strike in Benue, kill Rev Fathers and 17 others

Suspected herdsmen, Tuesday morning, attacked Ayar Mbalom village in Gwer East local Government Area of Benue State, killing 19 persons and burning down over 35 houses.
DAILY POST learnt that among those killed were Rev Fathers Gor Joseph, Felix and many others.
The attackers also sacked the entire villagers.
Confirming the incident, Moses Iorapuu, Director of Communications, Catholic Diocese of Makurdi in a statement sent to DAILY POST, called on the federal government to end the senseless killings in the state and the country at large.
He said the deceased were until their demise, serving at St. Ignatius Quasi Parish Ukpor-Mbalom.
“In their classic style, they burnt down homes, destroy food items and kill. The police seem to know nothing of the attacks which have been going on in other villages within Benue State since the Anti-Open Grazing Law came into effect last year,” Iorapuu told DAILY POST.
Meanwhile, the Police Command in Benue has confirmed the killing of 16 people, including two Catholic priests, in the fresh attacks.
Mr Owoseni Fatai, commissioner, told newsmen on Tuesday in Makurdi that unknown gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, opened fire on Catholic worshippers during morning Mass on Tuesday.
“The worshippers were attacked around 5 a.m. during morning Mass.
“Other victims were killed during a burial ceremony later in the day,” he said.
Fatai, who described the attacks as “unfortunate”, vowed to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
He said that preliminary investigation had revealed that the herdsmen had stayed around the area for sometime before carrying out the attacks

Benue Killings:Herdsmen attck Catholic Church, parishioners, kill 2 Catholic priests

The Catholic Diocese of Makurdi has confirmed the killing of two of its priests, Rev Fathers Joseph Gor and Felix Tyolaha, in an early hour attack on St Ignatius Quasi Parish, Ukpor, Mbalom in Gwer West Local Government Council of Benue. A statement by its Director of Communications, Rev Fr Moses Iorapuu, said that the attacks were perpetrated by herdsmen who stormed the Mbalom community and killed the two priests during the morning mass at the church. The Diocese expressed regret at the nonchalant attitude of the security agencies in containing the killings. It said the herdsmen, who stormed the community, burnt down houses, destroyed crops and killed people. The church, therefore, urged the relevant authorities to stop the killings in the Benue valley. Iorapuu said the Diocese had been active in providing food and relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s) since the onset of hostilities in the state and wondered why it could be marked as a target of attacks. “The attack on the priests is an attack on everything that we ever stood for and believed in.” Meanwhile, concerted efforts to get reaction from the Benue Police Command failed as its Public Relations Officer, ASP Moses Yamu, was not forthcoming with remarks. Rev. Fr. Gor had before the attack written on Facebook; “Living in fear. The fulani herdsmen are still around us in Mbalom. They refuse to go. They still go grazing around us. No weapons to depend on ourselves”. Herdsmen in the early hours of the morning attacked a Catholic Church and parishioners who went for 5.30 a.m. mass. Reports say the bodies of the dead have been taken to St. Theresa’s Hospital Makurdi. Related

GUNMEN IN ARMY UNIFORMS KILL 26 IN BENUE

Gunmen in the army uniforms yesterday went berserk, killing 26 people, following an attack on Jandeikyura, a border settlement between Taraba and Benue states. The incident occurred in the wee hours of Friday in Tiv dominated villages, bringing the total number of people murdered in the area to 67. This is coming as kidnappers on Thursday night killed two policemen and abducted two newlyweds as well as 19 others in Birnin Gwari area of Kaduna State. The Benue border community had earlier been attacked on Thursday where 41 people were killed. The villages attacked were Akaanya, Kpete and Tse- Orliam.
The ‘soldiers’, whom Saturday Telegraph gathered were from Taraba, made incursion into the area, allegedly in search of two of their colleagues, reportedly killed by the rampaging Fulani herdsmen. Governor Samuel Ortom had confirmed the killing of an officer of the Nigerian Army by the herders and abandoned in his pool of blood.
The deceased officer, who was among the soldiers deployed in the state for peacekeeping operations, was killed at River Tyulen crossing point in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. Sources from Ukum Local Government told Saturday Telegraph that the suspected soldiers, who were in large numbers, came in search of their missing colleagues but as they could not find the corpses resorted to indiscriminate shootings during which no fewer than 26 persons were felled. Speaking with Saturday Telegraph, an indigene of the area, who pleaded anonymity, said:
“The said soldiers came from neighbouring Taraba State in a military warfare manner and discovered that some of their people who were killed by Fulani herdsmen were still missing. “Instead of concentrating their attack in Taraba where they were supposed to station, they decided to invade Benue villages to launch the attack which led to the killing of 26 people”. “As I speak with you, there is serious tension in the local government as thousands of people including women, children and old people are fleeing the area in droves and leaving their food items cultivated at the mercy of the invaders”. Another source who identified himself simply as John Alaghga, alleged that the soldiers also killed a market chief and also set ablaze church buildings at NKST Church Akaanya. Mr. Alaghga hinted that after the attack, the arsonists proceeded to Tse-Orliam and Kpete River where many refuges had run to hide and opened fire on them.
“I have been sojourning in the area for decades now but I can tell you that what I saw those people do was terrible. They were killing people like chickens and the entire area had been deserted,” he said. Acting governor of the state, Engr. Benson Abounu told journalists that the government had evolved proactive measures to stem the killings.Abounu denied knowledge of the attack and killings of innocent citizens of the state, saying he had not contacted the local government chairman to brief him on the attack and killings. “What I have experienced from the ‘Cat Race’ had been that measures taken by the security forces had been reactionary. You hear that there was one attack or another here and there and reports were made and security forces move in, stabilise the situation and they get back and then you hear of another one.
That’s how it has been going on, and it has been all reactionary.” But today we held a security meeting and we decided that the best approach should be proactive; we should forestall rather than repel a situation that had already gone bad. “It is incumbent on the security forces to block all entry points where these attackers come from so that we can be able to forestall any attack that might take place”.
The deputy governor also confirmed the killing of two people at the Agboughul community within Makurdi territory by suspected herdsmen on Thursday morning. He said as a result of the attack, security network in the state had been reviewed and expressed satisfaction with the cooperation given the government by security chiefs which he said would go a long way in bringing the situation under control.
Taraba death toll rises as women protest ‘complicity’
Meanwhile, following the recovery of additional seven more bodies, the death toll in Wednesday’s attack on a Taraba village has risen to 32 as against the initial figure of 25, earlier recorded on Thursday. This is coming as hundreds of women in Takum Local Government Area of the state yesterday staged a peaceful protest within Takum township while calling for an end to the killings as well as “army’s harassment and complicity”. A resident of the village, Hon. Orbee Uchiv, who spoke with Saturday Telegraph confirmed the figure in a telephone interview while informing that the bodies had since been buried by the community.
Uchiv, who noted that the community had been deserted following the attacks, however said there is a deployment of security personnel in the area. While informing that some of those injured are receiving treatment at the Wukari General Hospital and other private hospitals in the area, he said
